Ease Dental Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry
Patients who feel very anxious when they are at the dental office find sedation helps them not care as much that they're here. Many dental offices do not offer sedation dentistry and are very happy when they find out that we do! The two types of sedation dentistry offered at Dr. Tucker's Williamsville, NY, practice include nitrous oxide and conscious sedation.
Nitrous Oxide is a breath by breath gas that you breathe through your nose. This will make you feel relaxed and bring you to your "happy place" so you don't care as much about being at the dentist. Patients love nitrous oxide, also called 'laughing gas,' because they can drive themselves to and from the dental office. As soon as the gas is shut off and you breathe pure oxygen you will feel like yourself again. We try to schedule our nitrous oxide gas patients first thing in the morning since you can not have anything to eat or drink 4 hours before your appointment.
Conscious Sedation is more intense than nitrous oxide. Dr. Tucker will prescribe you a Valium to take the night before your appointment followed by giving you a dose of Halcion (sleeping pill) that suits your height and weight when you come in for your dental visit. We also offer nitrous to boost the sedation if needed. Conscious sedation makes you less aware of what is going on and even less anxious about being at the dental office. Unlike nitrous, you will need someone to drive you to your appointment and pick you up. You are not allowed to drive yourself. Once you take the Valium the night before, you are not to have anything to eat or drink until after your procedure. Patients like conscious sedation because they feel calm and sleepy but are still able to listen to commands (like keeping your mouth open).
With both types of sedation, we will give you or your driver an instruction sheet on what you should do before and after your visit in case you forget and also a medication sheet.
