What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are small titanium posts placed in the jaw that replace damaged tooth roots. These implant posts serve as the foundation for restoration pieces, including crowns, bridges, and dentures.
Dr. Donald Tucker offers a full range of implant treatments, from single tooth restoration to full arch restoration. Patients can choose from traditional or All-On-4 dental implants. We use advanced dental implant brands, including BioHorizons and Astra Tech Implant System, for faster osseointegration and a shorter recovery time. Dr. Tucker also offers sedation options, including nitrous oxide and conscious sedation, to ensure maximum patient comfort.
What Are the Benefits?
Dental implants offer the most permanent, lifelike solution for missing or extracted teeth. Unlike traditional dentures or bridges worn over the gums, dental implants can reinforce jawbone strength and density while preventing atrophy. When we lose a tooth, the underlying bone begins to break down. However, dental implants help maintain jawbone structure since the titanium implants fuse with the bone through osseointegration. Additional benefits include:
- Improved self-confidence
- Natural look and function
- More comfortable chewing
- Less restriction of foods
- Clearer speech
- No damage or alteration to other teeth
- Simpler hygiene routine than dentures
- Improved oral health
Candidacy for Dental Implants
A good candidate for dental implants includes those who possess stable oral health and are considered low risk for surgical procedures. A good candidate must also have sufficient bone density and tissue for implants. If there is not ample jawbone density, preparatory procedures such as a bone graft may be necessary to reach candidacy.
Dental implants may not be a good solution if the patient smokes, or if the following are present:
- Untreated diabetes
- Heart disorder or heart disease
- Cancer or radiation treatment
- Blood disorder
Each patient's timeline is unique and depends on oral health status. If you require preparatory treatments this will increase your overall treatment timeline. Dr. Tucker will conduct a consultation to ascertain the health and state of your teeth, gums, and jawbone.
If there are pre-existing conditions, such as tooth decay or other damage, Dr. Tucker will discuss your options. If your jawbone or surrounding tissue require reinforcement before they can support implants, Dr. Tucker can perform tissue and bone grafts. These treatments will lengthen your timeline, since the bone will need sufficient time to heal.
Once we determine the type of restoration you require, we will take impressions and send them to our lab, which only uses products of the highest quality.
Once we know that your jaw and gums can safely support implants, we can schedule your procedure. With traditional implants, we will surgically place the titanium posts in your jaw, before stitching the gum tissue over them. The implants will then fuse to the jawbone. This process is known as osseointegration and usually takes four to six months.
Once we determine the type of restoration you require, we will take impressions and send them to our partner lab, which only uses products made in the United States, and of the highest quality. The lab will create your restoration to match your bite as well as the shade of your smile.
During your final appointment, Dr. Tucker will attach abutments to the titanium posts and cement your restoration in place. All-On-4 dental implants require a similar process, but take significantly less time by using fewer implants and placing both implants and restorations on the same day.
