Conceal Various Cosmetic Concerns at Once with Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells that fit over the front surface of your teeth to conceal minor imperfections, such as chips, cracks, stains, and other cosmetic blemishes that can detract from the appearance of your smile. Patients who want to correct these problems and improve their smile can turn to Dr. Donald Tucker in Buffalo, NY. We are proud to provide our patients with high-quality porcelain veneers that look and feel natural.
Candidates for Porcelain Veneers
Most patients at our practice who have cosmetic concerns about their smiles are candidates for veneers. Dental conditions, such as gum disease or tooth decay, are not only harmful to your oral health, but they can require removal of the veneer for treatment. For this reason, any adverse oral health conditions will need to be treated before veneers can be placed.
You may be candidate for porcelain veneers if you have:
- Angled or misaligned teeth
- Discolored, stained, or yellowed teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
Your Porcelain Veneers Treatment
The first phase of treatment involves your consultation. At this initial visit, Dr. Tucker will assess your oral health and smile to determine if porcelain veneers, or another cosmetic treatment like porcelain crowns, can best address your needs. If it is determined that porcelain veneers are right for your situation, you will collaborate with Dr. Tucker to determine the shape, size, and shade of your veneer. Some patients may choose to undergo teeth whitening as a preparatory measure.
The next phase of treatment is preparing your teeth for veneers placement. Dr. Tucker will remove only enough enamel to create enough space between the teeth for the veneers. Impressions will be taken of the prepared teeth, and the shade of your surrounding natural teeth will be noted. Your impressions and enamel color information will then be sent to ceramicist, who will fabricate your veneers according to your specific criteria.
The final phase of treatment is placing your veneers. You will return to our office when your veneers are ready—approximately two weeks after impressions are taken. Your teeth will be cleaned and buffed to help the bonding process. Next, Dr. Tucker will verify that the specifics of your veneer match your natural smile and bite patterns. Finally, the veneers will be carefully positioned over your teeth and firmly secured with a dental cement.
Porcelain veneers, a convenient therapy that takes place over two dental appointments, can conceal practically any flaw to completely transform your smile.
Maintaining Your Porcelain Veneers
Because veneers are made from a dental-grade porcelain that can withstand excessive pressure, they can generally last for many years with proper care. To get the most out of their veneers, patients are encouraged to avoid certain habits that can undermine the integrity of the veneer, like fingernail biting. You may be encouraged to wear a night guard if you grind your teeth while you sleep.
You can also protect your veneers by preventing tooth decay. Veneers will need to be removed if a cavity develops in the tooth over which the veneer is placed. Keeping up with good daily hygiene habits and your biannual dental visits can keep your teeth healthy and your veneers durable.
